I have spent the last 3 years in America studying for a degree in Business. At 18 I was naive enough to think that I would not experience any significant 'culture shocks', to my dismay I was wrong. It has been a while now since such 'shocks' have affected me but there are some considerable differences between the USA and England.
- Religion is so much more prominent in society stateside. I was surprised by the number of involved religious members compared to the decreased following in England. I saw a show last week called Jesus Camp based in Missouri which could only be described as 'scary.' I am in no way against religion, but was just made much more aware of it while I was in America.
- The price of everything was so much cheaper than in the UK, it made me resent spending my money in England for a while.....I got over it....but only because I had to!
- Food portions in the USA are huge! In fact, scrap that....everything is bigger over there! The customer service in most places was generally at a higher standard too and free drink refills, salads and bread will be greatly missed when I return to England for good!
- When dressing up for any formal occasion American guys love (and I mean love) to wear a blue shirt and khaki trousers. Khakis in general are regarded in high esteem by the Americans I found!
- Comedy in America is on a different level to that of England, more slapstick and less clever usually, however there are exceptions. More Americans understood my sense of humoUr **than I initially anticipated, they had to get to know me first though.
- **American spellings are annoying!!!!
